Sunnyside Park shines with a new look

With summer in full swing, the Recreation and Parks Department in partnership with Edge Church has completed the upgrade at Sunnyside Park in Edgemead, marking a significant milestone for the local community.
The park’s transformation was made possible through a generous R2,7 million donation by Edge Church, as outlined in the donation agreement. Beyond this, the church went above and beyond, providing additional support to bring the project to life.
The City’s Recreation and Parks Department played a key role by supplying 30 trees - Harpephyllum caffrum, Syzygium cordatum, and Ficus rubiginosa - along with mulch, a water meter and refurbished play equipment to further enhance the space.
‘Sunnyside Park has always been very popular among residents and we are delighted with the transformation. We would like to thank the Edge Church for its contribution to the project. The City is also proud to have supported this upgrade by providing key environmental and infrastructure enhancements. We would like to invite residents and families to fully exploit the facility and all it offers, but to also help us in caring for this critical community asset,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
The newly upgraded park now boasts:
• 30 additional trees and planted beds
• Landscaped Berm with shrubs
• Upgraded play equipment, including swings, a wooden jungle gym and rocking horses
• Safer synthetic grass and rubberised surfacing
• New benches and picnic tables
• Enhancements to the dog park
• Laterite pathways
• Improved pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle access
A key feature of the project is the addition of a new public parking area, which will assist with traffic flow in surrounding streets, particularly during church services, school drop-offs and scout hall meetings.
The church has also joined the City’s “Friends” initiative and entered into an agreement aimed at assisting with the activation, conservation, maintenance and management of the park.

We wanted to invest in its future, ensuring that it remains a safe, beautiful and welcoming environment for all. Seeing this vision come to life has been incredible and we hope this upgraded space continues to be a blessing to families, dog-walkers, schoolchildren and the broader community,’ said Executive Pastor of Edge Church, Rozanne Hammer.
‘The enhancements to Sunnyside Park are about so much more than infrastructure – it fosters a sense of belonging and well-being for all who visit. Our hope is that it remains a vibrant and well-loved recreational space for years to come,’ added Councillor Higham.
